Arizona Diminished Value
Diminished Value Claims in Arizona, Explained
Even after a perfect repair, a vehicle with an accident history is worth less than one without it. That loss in resale value is called diminished value — and in Arizona, you may be able to recover it from the at-fault driver's insurance.
What Is Diminished Value?
Diminished value is the difference between what your vehicle was worth before the accident and what it's worth after the repair. Accident history follows the vehicle on history reports, and buyers and dealers pay less for a car that's been in a crash — sometimes thousands of dollars less, even when the repair was done correctly.
The repair check from the insurance company covers the cost of fixing the car. It does not automatically cover the value your car lost simply by having been in an accident. That's a separate part of your property damage claim.
Does Arizona Allow Diminished Value Claims?
Generally, yes. Arizona recognizes diminished value as part of a property damage claim against the at-fault driver — known as a third-party claim. If the other driver caused the accident, you can typically pursue the loss in value through their liability insurance.
Claiming diminished value under your own policy (a first-party claim) depends on your policy language and is often more limited. Every claim is different, and this page isn't legal advice — but if the other driver was at fault, it's worth having your diminished value reviewed.
How to File a Diminished Value Claim in Arizona
- Document the accident and keep every repair record, estimate, supplement, and invoice.
- Get an independent diminished value appraisal that measures your vehicle's pre-accident value against its post-repair value.
- Submit a written demand with the appraisal and repair documentation to the at-fault driver's insurance company.
- Negotiate — carriers routinely open with low offers on diminished value, and the first number is rarely the final one.
